Final Fantasy XIV Online vs. other MMORPGs

So what makes Final Fantasy XIV Online different from other MMORPGs? This is a hard question to answer, as there are hundreds of MMORPGs out there on the market that has similar UI and combat systems. Most gamers will agree that World of Warcraft is currently the gold standard as the king of MMORPGs. As a previous WoW player, I have to say that the game-play is not what makes the game popular; it is the immense player communities that have been growing every single day within the game. MMO games require communities to thrive, and FFXIV Online is no exception. The real question to ask then is: What makes FFXI players want to transfer to FFXIV?

There are not many MMOG sequels out there right now due to how the MMOG industry works. It is hard to keep players interested in a MMOG for a long time. What Blizzard has done extremely well is to push new WoW content regularly to keep players coming back for more. SquareEnix will require to do the same; they need developers to stay on the game after it is released in 2010.

Final Fantasy XIV Online: out for PS3 and PC

While I was surfing on the web, I encountered some articles that states along the lines of Final Fantasy XIV coming exclusively to PS3. This is NOT true, as the game will have a PC version as well (PC gamers rejoice!). However, some fans were wondering about the PC system requirements. For now, all we know is that the game is coming out sometime next year.

Most MMORPGs have low to mid system requirements in the hopes to attract a large market share in the MMO gaming space. From what I have seen from the E3 2009 trailer, the game’s graphic is VERY similar to FFXI, which was released in 2003 in North America. Final Fantasy XI minimum system requirement were:

Pentium III 800 Mhz CPU
Windows 2000/XP
128MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce with 32 MB or ATI Radeon 9000 or higher
9.5 GB free hard drive space
DVD-ROM drive
Internet connection required

As you can see, FFXI is mostly relied on the video card hardware. The better your video card, the better you can enjoy the eye-candies of FFXI. I believe it goes the same with FFXIV.

Same job system?

I will explain what the job system is for those who never played Final Fantasy XI. Online. Each job has unique abilities that must be activated by the player in order to come into effect, similar to World of Warcraft’s class system. However, what differentiates World of Warcraft to FFXI Online is that players are able to change their jobs any time they wish inside their “Mog House”.

Even though SquareEnix hasn’t release the details on whether the new FFXIV will feature the same job system from FFXI, from what I can tell from last month’s E3 2009 release trailer, characters (and they amour they wear) resemble extremely close to the ones in FFXI. This led me to believe that the job system will be transferred over to FFXIV.
